Italy-based Piaggio, a manufacturer of two-wheeled motor vehicles and compact commercial vehicles, has opened a new production facility in Cikarang, Indonesia. The 55,000m2 factory will produce Vespa scooters for the local market.
Indonesia is the world’s third-largest scooter and motorcycle market behind India and China. Approximately five million two-wheelers are sold in Indonesia annually and sales are forecast to reach more than six million by 2025. The country is also expected to experience double-digit population and per-capita GDP growth during this period.
In a press release, chief executive officer Roberto Colaninno commented: “The new plant in Indonesia sees the Piaggio Group take another stride forward in the strategic international growth programme it began more than ten years ago, which has made it one of the industry’s leading players, with a portfolio of unique brands, a proud symbol of Italy around the world. Piaggio Group sales on the Indonesian market grew by 61% in 2021 and will continue to rise in the near future.”
With the new facility in Cikarang, Piaggio has eight manufacturing plants worldwide. The company operates three factories in Italy as well as sites in China, India, Vietnam and the US.
