DHL has opened a new 32,000m² international logistics centre in the village of Robakowo, 16km south-east of Poznan, Poland’s fifth-largest city.
The €180m ($195.30m) centre – a joint project between DHL’s eCommerce, Post & Parcel and Freight units – features 3,000m of conveyor belts and has a sorting capacity of 45,000 parcels per hour. Coupled with a workforce of 500 people, the new project is one of Europe’s largest logistics centres, according to DHL.
“With the new international logistics centre, we are expanding our capacities and capabilities to meet the growing e-commerce shipment volumes,” said Tobias Meyer, CEO of DHL Group. “This facility, equipped with cutting-edge technology, will improve the quality of service, making it a distinctive addition to our European network. It will reduce transit times to many European markets, particularly between Germany and Poland, underlining our commitment to providing our customers with fast and reliable cross-border shipping services.”
The latest move comes on the back of many retailers and e-tailers turning to Poland as a regional hub for their shipments to and from Europe. In 2022, the volume of goods shipped in and out of the country hit 2.27 billion tonnes, up 1% from 2021 (2.25 billion), according to data gathered by Statistics Poland, the country’s agency responsible for collecting and publishing economic and social data.
DHL’s latest development in Poland comes after the company last month pledged another $200m in investments to expand its life sciences and healthcare capabilities in the US. DHL’s Supply Chain division manages 35 warehouses in the life sciences sector, with plans to grow its network to 40 sites by the end of 2024.
The company’s new logistics centre will “also handle shipments for Post + Parcel in Germany, including domestic volumes to and returns from Germany”, a press statement released on Friday reads. “The Poznan hub will have direct linehaul connections to all parcel hubs in Germany, Poland and many other European countries, ensuring seamless connectivity. The collaboration between DHL eCommerce and Post + Parcel Germany unlocks the potential to handle a combined volume of one million parcels daily during peak times.”
