US lab equipment and services business Thermo Fisher Scientific has opened a new clinical and commercial ultra-cold facility in Bleiswijk, Netherlands.

The new site specialises in ambient to cryogenic storage, clinical and commercial packaging, labelling and distribution, and clinical qualified person release services. Thermo Fisher has said it will help to meet increasing demand from cell and gene therapy clinical trials in Europe and to accelerate the development of advanced therapies.

Spread across 5,000sqm, the facility accommodates space for clinical and commercial packaging services for cell and gene therapy products, end-to-end biorepository storage solutions and associated supply chain services. It is Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP)-certified.

The site uses 15% solar power and operates gas-free while providing sustainable heating and cooling as part of its global goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
