Hyundai Motor announced this week that it will launch production of its forthcoming Ioniq 9 next year in the US, which is expected to be a key market for the company’s large battery-powered SUV, according to local reports.
The South Korean automaker’s global chief operating officer (COO) and head of its North American operations, Jose Munoz, confirmed that the Ioniq 9 will be produced at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) plant in the state of Georgia, adding that the facility “will also produce Genesis and Kia vehicles in the future and supply them throughout North America.”
Hyundai completed construction last month of the HMGMA plant, a 300,000 unit/year facility dedicated to the production of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs). The plant was originally intended to produce only battery electric vehicles (BEVs), but PHEVs have been added to the line-up due to the BEV segment’s slower than expected growth in the last two years.
The automaker recently released teaser images of the Ioniq 9, an SUV based on its E-GMP dedicated BEV platform featuring three rows of seats, with a full launch event scheduled for later this month. US buyers of this model are expected to benefit from tax incentives worth up to US$7,500 under the government’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).
Jose Munoz said in a statement: “The launch of the Ioniq 9 is expected to be a tremendous opportunity for Hyundai to target new segments. The spacious interior, versatile utility, and various technologies will help attract new customer groups such as families.”
