The South Korean company Samyang Foods, producer of Buldak stir-fried noodles, has announced its plans to open its first overseas factory in China through its subsidiary Samyang Singapore PTE.
The company plans to invest $45m to establish its facilities in China through Samyang Singapore PTE, of which it owns 90%. Samyang Foods did not specify a timeframe or location details regarding the new plant.
The development will allow the company to diversify its production base and reduce the risk of concentrating its operations in one location. Currently, production for export to China is managed in the southern province of Gyeongsang at Miryang Plant 1. Despite starting construction on Miryang Plant 2 in March earlier this year, the company anticipates a supply shortage around 2027 without the new production base in China.
“It was expected that production would fall short of demand around 2027, and there was a need to decentralise factories. In China, production and consumption are possible through localisation. Therefore, the goal is to resolve export issues through localization,” a Samyang Foods official explained.
The business is eager to access China’s consumer market, which includes a developing middle class with rising purchasing power.
Out of Samyang Food’s total sales for the first three quarters of 2024, 77% of them came through exports. China is the company’s biggest market, representing 25% of export sales. After production begins in China, the plants in South Korea will produce supplies to export to the US and Europe.
