Siemens Healthineers, a medical device company based in Germany and a subsidiary of the multinational conglomerate Siemens, broke ground on its new research and development (R&D), and manufacturing facility in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, China. The company has invested approximately $136.5m (over CNY 1 billion) in the new facility.

The facility, which covers a land area of 63,000sqm and a floor space of 98,000sqm, is scheduled to start operations by the end of 2027. It will focus on R&D and manufacturing of angiography equipment and essential components for magnetic resonance imaging systems (MRI), including the company’s new Dry Cool superconducting magnet.

This will be Siemens Healthineers second facility in Shenzhen, with the first having been established in 2002. This first R&D and manufacturing facility is one of the company’s largest facilities outside of their base in Germany. It is the only global facility to focus on R&D and production for angiography systems and to have a full MRI value chain.

“By enhancing the local R&D and production of high-end medical devices and core components, Siemens Healthineers aims to expand the breadth and depth of product localization and through building regional open innovation platforms, the company also intends to collaborate with partners to create a more resilient and sustainable medical innovation ecosystem,” Wao added.

In 2020, there were 12.6 pieces of medical MRI equipment owned per million people in China, which is about one-fifth of the number in Japan and one-third of the number in the US, according to a report by market observer CN Healthcare.
