German-based automotive supplier Leoni AG has launched a new production plant in Agadir, Morocco. It has invested nearly $21m (€20m) in the new site.

The factory in the city’s Souss-Massa industrial acceleration zone occupies 7.6ha including 19,000sqm of production space.

The new facility, first announced in July 2023, will focus on producing wiring systems for the commercial vehicles (CV) segment. Additionally, it will reportedly create over 3,000 new jobs by 2027, growing Leoni’s workforce in Morocco to 19,000.

The Agadir site will specialise in manufacturing complex wiring systems in small batches. More specifically, it will cater to the demands of the truck, powertrain and off-road categories under the CV segment.

Ingo Spengler, COO of Leoni AG, stated that the company plans to outperform the market benchmarks in the CV segment in the coming years.

“Today’s plant opening in Agadir shows that we are putting our words into action to strengthen our competitiveness in the commercial vehicles segment,” he added.

Fakhri Bouguerra, managing director of Leoni Morocco, commented on Agadir’s strategic location and its proximity to the plants of various CV manufacturers.

“The region scores with a sufficient number of skilled workers. Moreover, we also have space for further growth on the site,” he added.
