UK-based Harmony Energy, a renewable energy storage systems developer, will start construction on New Zealand’s biggest solar farm after finalising the project’s finances. The project is expected to cost $140mn (£113mn).
The Tauhei Solar Farm will be located in Te Aroha in the Matamata-Piako District north of the island. It is being developed through a joint venture with First Renewables, a subsidiary of one of New Zealand’s biggest energy groups Clarus. The project is expected to produce 202MW and provide electricity to 35,000 homes.
Harmony Energy is developing ten solar and battery projects in the country, each producing up to 250MW. In September, it received approval for two other projects in Marton and Opunake. These are expected to create around 400 jobs and supply electricity to power about 30,000 homes when construction is finished.
“Obtaining resource consent for these projects represents another milestone for the New Zealand business. Construction of the Tauhei Solar Farm is on track to start this spring so it’s great to know there’s more in the pipeline,” Harmony Energy director Pete Grogan said in September.
Harmony Energy has a power purchase agreement with New Zealand’s utility company Meridian Energy, which is expected to purchase the plant’s output for the first ten years of production.
