GE Healthcare, headquartered in Illinois, US, has announced a $138m investment to expand its Carrigtohill contrast media manufacturing facility in Cork, Ireland. Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility.
The new development is located on the site of GE Healthcare’s existing facility in Cork, and will increase the company’s capacity to supply contrast media by 25mn annual doses by the end of 2027, helping to meet growing global demand.
The 3,000sqm facility will include a new filling line, multipurpose powder handling systems, solution preparation vessels, autoclaves and high-end automation systems, which will support both pipeline and established products. The heightened production capacity is expected to help the company meet global demand.
Ageing populations and the rising incidence of chronic illnesses worldwide are expected to double demand for iodine-based contrast media used in X-ray, CT, and interventional procedures over the course of the next ten years. In 2024, GE HealthCare’s global production facilities produced over 100mn doses of contrast media.
President and CEO of GE HealthCare’s pharmaceutical diagnostics (PDx) segment, Kevin O’Neill, said, “As an industry leader we have a responsibility to help meet the growing global demand for contrast media from healthcare providers and their patients. This new facility demonstrates our broader commitment not just to address future demand, but also to increase resiliency and security of industry supply for customers.”
In addition to developing and supplying radiopharmaceuticals to support diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment selection across clinical pathways in neurology, cardiology, and oncology, the PDx business employs more than 4000 people worldwide.
