As of 2021, Belarus has a population of 9.4 million, making it the 95th largest country in the world by this measure. There are 46.5% males and 53.5% females.

There are 4.9 million people employed in Belarus, with an unemployment rate of 0.5% – 23,761 people.


Belarus is the 202nd largest economy in the world with a GDP of $62bn. Belarus’s GDP has grown by 5% between 2010 and 2021 and is expected to grow by 5% by 2025.

As of 2018 there were 389,327 students in tertiary education in Belarus, with 649,357 students in secondary and 410,487 in primary education. Belarus spent 5% of its GDP on education in 2019.

Belarus ranked 49th in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 37th.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $2.4bn and private healthcare expenditure equalled $1.3bn in 2018.

The largest urban areas in Belarus are Minsk (2 million people), Gomel (540,139) and Mogilev (388,496).
