As of 2021, Algeria has a population of 44.6 million, making it the 34th largest country in the world by this measure. There are 50.5% males and 49.5% females.

There are 10.8 million people employed in Algeria, with an unemployment rate of 14.3% – 1.8 million people.


Algeria is the 182nd largest economy in the world with a GDP of $160.4bn. Algeria’s GDP has grown by 0% between 2010 and 2021 and is expected to grow by 10% by 2025.

As of 2018 there were 1.6 million students in tertiary education in Algeria, with 4.6 million students in secondary and 4.4 million in primary education. Algeria spent 4.3% of its GDP on education in 2008.

Algeria ranked 157th in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 157th. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), Algeria finished 89th, after ranking 89th in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $8bn and private healthcare expenditure equalled $3.9bn in 2018.
