As of 2021, Ukraine has a population of 43.9 million, making it the 35th largest country in the world by this measure. There are 46.4% males and 53.6% females.

There are 18 million people employed in Ukraine, with an unemployment rate of 9.1% – 1.4 million people.


Ukraine is the 51st largest economy in the world with a GDP of $131bn. Ukraine’s GDP has grown by -3.7% between 2010 and 2021 and is expected to grow by 28% by 2025.

As of 2021 there are 3.1 million students in tertiary education in Ukraine, with 4.1 million students in secondary and 1.7 million in primary education. Ukraine spent 5.3% of its GDP on education in 2019.

Ukraine ranked 64th in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 71st. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), Ukraine finished 85th, after ranking 85th in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $3.8bn and private healthcare expenditure equalled $4.9bn in 2018.

The largest urban areas in Ukraine are Kyiv (4 million people), Kharkiv (1.4 million) and Odesa (1 million).
