Investing in Italy: what you need to know

As of 2021, Italy has a population of 60.1 million, making it the 24th largest country in the world by this measure. There are 48.8% males and 51.2% females.

There are 22.5 million people employed in Italy, with an unemployment rate of 11% – 2.7 million people.


Italy is the eighth largest economy in the world with a GDP of $2trn. Italy’s GDP has grown by -4% between 2010 and 2021 and is expected to grow by 14% by 2025.

As of 2021 there are 1.9 million students in tertiary education in Italy, with 4.6 million students in secondary and 2.9 million in primary education. Italy spent 3.5% of its GDP on education in 2019.

Italy ranked 58th in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 51st. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), Italy finished 30th, after ranking 30th in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $135.6bn and private healthcare expenditure equalled $47.1bn in 2018.

The largest urban areas in Italy are Rome (4.4 million people), Milan (4.4 million) and Milan Province (3.3 million).
