Investing in Mexico: what you need to know

As of 2021, Mexico has a population of 128.5 million, making it the 10th largest country in the world by this measure. There are 48.9% males and 51.1% females.

There are 53.5 million people employed in Mexico, with an unemployment rate of 5.2% – 2 million people.


Mexico is the 16th largest economy in the world with a GDP of $1.1trn. Mexico’s GDP has grown by 8% between 2010 and 2021 and is expected to grow by 42% by 2025.

As of 2021 there are 4.9 million students in tertiary education in Mexico, with 14.4 million students in secondary and 14.2 million in primary education. Mexico spent 4.9% of its GDP on education in 2019.

Mexico ranked 60th in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 54th. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), Mexico finished 48th, after ranking 48th in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $34.4bn and private healthcare expenditure equalled $32.4bn in 2018.

The largest urban areas in Mexico are Mexico City (22.5 million people), Monterrey (6.7 million) and Guadalajara (6.2 million).
