Abu Dhabi National Oil will use agentic AI to make operational improvements in the energy industry, the company’s CEO Sultan Al Jaber said at the opening of the Adipec conference. The agentic AI was developed by AIQ, an Abu Dhabi based AI company, in collaboration with Microsoft and G42.
Al Jaber said it would “speed up seismic surveys from months to days” and “increase the accuracy of production forecasts by up to 90%.” He added that the tool would help the industry be more sustainable by reducing emissions.
The partnership between the American technology giant Microsoft and Emirati AI firm G42 came under scrutiny earlier this year when Microsoft announced it would invest 1$.5bn in the firm. G42 is central to the UAE’s plan to become a global AI leader. It has connections to powerful members of the country’s royal family and national security adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed and is backed by the country’s sovereign wealth fund Mubadala.
The deal was signed after G42 severed ties with Chinese hardware suppliers to appease angsty US lawmakers. When asked if the investment was a prize for cutting ties, G42’s chief executive Peng Xiao said he would “focus on our decision to form this partnership with Microsoft to really develop our capabilities on a global scale. Less focus on what we choose not to do.”
Still, in July US lawmakers called for an official probe into the deal, citing concerns about the transfer of sensitive technology and G42’s historic ties to China.
AI agents are systems that can complete tasks without human supervision and do things that current AI models can’t. The technology is already being used by some companies to complete employee on-boarding and supply chain management.
