Japan-based manufacturer of heat pumps and air conditioning, Daikin, has announced that it is expanding its logistics operations in New Zealand with two purpose-built facilities in Auckland and Christchurch to meet customer demand.

The new site has 10 docks, a capacity of 10,900 pallet spaces, and capacity to distribute 470,000cbm of freight per year.

Daikin Park plans to merge all four of its Auckland sites into one, set across 12,150sqm in Mt Wellington, making it the biggest HVAC storage facility in New Zealand. The facility in Christchurch is set to begin construction within the next two years to cater to the expanding demand in the South Island area.

Managing Director, Ryuta Hayashibara, hopes that the new facility will strengthen Daikin Park’s position as a market leader in New Zealand.

He remarked that “The expansion will enable us to be more agile and improve our operation resulting in greater customer satisfaction while continuing to drive customer growth and focusing on technology and product innovation to improve indoor air quality and ensure all Kiwi homes are warm, dry, and sufficiently heated.”

He also highlighted the firm’s goal of “taking control of [their] own supply chain.” This feeling echoes the global trend of nearshoring, where companies bring manufacturing closer to consumer markets. This follows the COVID-19 pandemic, which heightened investors’ risk perception and made them want to shorten their supply chains.

August 19th marks the start of outbound operations from the Auckland facility, and by mid-October, the entire business will have moved and been operational.

Daikin’s latest facility in Auckland is aiming for a 5-star Green Star rating to back up the company’s sustainability goal of reaching carbon neutrality by the year 2050. This new structure features eco-conscious features like charging stations for electric vehicles, a solar panel system of 100kW, and tanks for collecting rainwater.

In addition to its storage and administrative space, the site also accommodates Daikin’s sales department, trade centre, and showroom. The area also includes a training academy that provides training programs designed to enhance, upgrade, and broaden the expertise of technicians, Daikin’s expert dealers, and the sales team.
