Amazon has announced a €10bn ($10.7bn) investment in Germany to expand its cloud infrastructure and logistics network across the country.

This move is expected to create 4,000 new jobs this year and increase Amazon’s total permanent workforce in Germany to more than 40,000.

The new jobs will be spread across three new fulfilment centres: one in Horn-Bad Meinberg, set to open in late summer 2024, one in Erfurt, which opened in May 2024, and one in Großenkneten, which has been operational since August 2023.

These roles will cover a variety of positions at all levels, impacting more than 100 German cities and municipalities.

This investment is part of Amazon’s larger commitment to Germany, bringing its total planned investments to €17.8bn.

This includes the €7.8bn AWS European Sovereign Cloud investment announced last month.

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud, an independent cloud for Europe, is scheduled to launch its first AWS Region in the State of Brandenburg by the end of 2025.

AWS also plans to invest €8.8bn by 2026 to continue developing its cloud infrastructure for the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region, which has been operational in the Frankfurt Rhein-Main area since 2014.

This investment aims to cater to the growing demand for AWS technologies in Germany, including advancements in artificial intelligence.

Amazon is said to have invested more than €77bn in Germany since 2010, contributing an estimated €50bn to the country’s GDP.

Amazon’s R&D sites in Aachen, Berlin, Dresden, and Tübingen focus on innovations for AWS, Amazon Music, Fire TV, Alexa, and fulfilment technologies.

Amazon Germany country manager Rocco Bräuniger said: “Amazon came to Germany over 25 years ago, and we continue to invest in the country. Our teams work hand-in-hand with state-of-the-art technologies to deliver for small businesses and customers, while AWS enables organisations of all sizes in Germany to grow their businesses and innovate using the cloud.

“And with that comes a positive impact for the country – and especially the communities where we operate – with a broad range of investments and jobs ranging from research and development to logistics and customer service.”
