Emirati supply chain companies DP World, Al Amir Group and Canada-based Adroit Overseas have broken ground on a new agri-terminal facility at Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port.
The new terminal, valued at Dh550m, will store and process various agricultural products including pulses, grains, corn and soybeans. In addition, it will be equipped with pneumatic ship unloaders and advanced conveying equipment to help with the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) growing food supply chain ambitions in the region.
Jebel Ali Port handles almost three-quarters (73%) of the UAE’s total food and beverage trade by value. Once completed, the new terminal will bring in an additional $330m in international trade and handle around 750,000 tonnes each year.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, group chairman and CEO of DP World, said: “The ground-breaking of our Agri Terminals facility is a landmark moment for DP World and our journey towards building resilience into the food supply chain of the UAE and the wider region.
“This investment will add world-class infrastructure to our flagship port, support national efforts to strengthen food security and significantly expand our flourishing agricultural trade ecosystem in Dubai,” bin Sulayem added.
The National Food Security Strategy 2051 aims to transform the UAE into an international food security hub by expanding its transport and logistics infrastructure. News about the recent agri-terminal facility comes after UNCTAD officials reported in January a 28% increase in greenfield foreign direct investment (FDI) announcements in the UAE in the third quarter of 2023. In July, officials in Abu Dhabi established a new investment ministry tasked with the development of strategies, legislation and other initiatives to bring in a wider range of FDI projects.
