Israeli speciality minerals company ICL group has announced a new $574m battery materials manufacturing plant in St. Louis, Missouri, US.

The facility will produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and will help meet the growing demand from the energy storage, electric vehicle (EV) and clean-energy industries. It will have an annual production capacity of 30,000 metric tons.

Initially, ICL started construction for a facility in Carondelet in August 2023. However, due to the site’s unsuitability, the company chose to change locations to Carrie Avenue, St. Louis. Construction will start in 2025 and the facility is expected to be operational by 2026.

The site will create 800 to 900 union construction positions during its establishment and around 150 full-time positions upon completion.

Saint Louis’ Planned Industrial Expansion Authority (PIEA) has announced 15-year property tax abatements for the project. The ICL group will also benefit from tax credits under the Missouri Works program. Furthermore, the project is partially funded by the Department of Energy under the bipartisan infrastructure law.

Phil Brown, president of the phosphate division and managing director of North America for ICL, said “St. Louis is a great location for us with the centre of gravity we have here with our headquarters and our R&D facilities as well.”
