The Republic of Congo will receive €36m ($37m) from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and €15m from the European Union (EU) to accelerate the country’s digital transformation. The funding will catalyze Congo’s National Digital Transition Plan, which aims to improve governance, provide digital skills training and help diversify the economy.

“This project will ensure sustainable digital governance, enhance human resources in the IT sector, improve cybersecurity, and promote the use of information and communication technologies across all areas of administration,” assured Congo’s Minister of Digital Economy Leon Juste Ibombo.

In a social media post, Ibombo showed government ministers discussing the funding with an EIB delegation. He noted that the influx in funding propelled the digitalisation programme to enter phase two.

The head of the EIB delegation, Christopher De Vreese, said the project aimed to improve government efficiency, strengthen the digital economy and position the country as a key actor within the region.

In the past week, the MNT Group rolled out a 5G network in the Congo and in Benin.

As Africa’s digital transformation takes the helm, countries are trying to capitalize. Nigeria recently launched the continent’s first digital free zone, Itana. The online platform aims to work as a gateway to African markets, allow foreign ownership, provide fiscal benefits and more.
