US-based cloud provider CoreWeave has opened a new office in London that will serve as its European headquarters.

The move is part of a broader expansion into Europe and a £1bn ($1.3bn) investment to bolster its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities in the UK. As part of its growth in the region, CoreWeave also plans to open two UK data centres during 2024 and further expansion in 2025.

The opening of the London base will see new roles created in engineering, operations, finance and go-to-market. The location was chosen to take advantage of the UK’s AI talent.

The company says its presence in the region “will support the continued expansion of AI labs and enterprise customers across the UK, bringing much-needed computing power to the UK.”

Mike Intrator, co-founder and CEO of CoreWeave, commented: “We are seeing unprecedented demand for AI infrastructure, and London is an important AI hub that we are investing in. Expanding our physical footprint in the UK is an important milestone in the next phase of CoreWeave’s growth.

“CoreWeave’s infrastructure will fill a void in the cloud market by providing AI enterprises with localised high-performance compute solutions that will help build and deploy the next generation of AI applications.”

Nvidia-backed CoreWeave was founded in 2017 and has seen huge growth, recently being valued at $19bn. Its data centres host deployments of GPU clusters and the underlying infrastructure that powers these clusters, while its cloud services provide infrastructure for AI workloads.
