US engines manufacturer Cummins has opened a new powertrain test centre at its Darlington campus in the UK.

While the new facility is fuel agnostics, Cummins has said it will help to position the company “at the forefront of ultra-low and zero emissions power technologies, as the industry focuses on reducing greenhouse gas contributions and improving air quality.”

Developed with an investment of £13m ($16.8m), the two-storey facility covers an area of 738sqm and houses testing facilities for fully robotic driving with manual or automatic transmissions, road-grade and load simulation, wheel-slip simulation and engine duty cycle recreation.

The facility expands Cummins’ current engine testing capabilities and will test full powertrains running on advanced diesel, natural gas, zero-carbon hydrogen fuel and battery electric technologies.

Jonathon White, vice president of engine business engineering at Cummins, said: “It is a key part of our Destination Zero strategy to reduce the greenhouse gas and air quality impacts of our products – helping our customers in their energy transition, whatever solution they chose.”

“Cummins’ broad powertrain engineering capability paves the way for the adoption of cleaner technologies while advancing driveability, performance, efficiency and sustainability as well as minimising operational costs.”

Cummins has been manufacturing in Darlington since 1965. The campus is home to an engine and exhaust after-treatment plant, technical operations and a support-staff workforce.

Earlier this month, Cummins opened its first IT Global Competency Center at its India Office Campus in Pune, Maharashtra.
