US-based health-tech company Datavant has unveiled its new research and development (R&D) hub in Galway, Ireland. The Irish Government is supporting this project through the country’s investment promotion agency, Industrial Development Agency (IDA) Ireland.

Initially, Datavant Ireland will operate from the co-working space Portershed, with a city centre office planned to open later this year. It has also announced the appointment of Ciaran O’Toole as its new vice president of engineering and Galway technical lead. Based in Galway, Ciaran will lead the effort to build Datavant’s engineering team in Ireland.

Datavant’s newly established facility will contribute to the company’s overarching global development strategy for product creation. Additionally, it will function as an integrated element of its technology and product development division.

Seeking top tech talent and continuous productivity led Datavant to create a global development centre outside the US. The company specifically chose Galway because of its rich talent pool, particularly in health tech. Furthermore, Galway also provides a convenient location for serving the company’s EU customers.

The company plans to initially hire up to 125 people at its new site by the end of 2027. It has begun hiring, primarily for diverse engineering roles. These will be focused on privacy and linkage technologies supporting its life sciences, ecosystem, and public sector businesses. It is also recruiting for security and corporate systems tech roles.

The Galway team will significantly expand Datavant’s existing team of engineers, data scientists, privacy experts, and product managers in the UK.

Datavant CEO Kyle Armbrester said: “Our new Global Development Centre in Galway is going to be a critical part of achieving our vision that every health decision is powered by the right data at the right time in the right format.”

Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, Datavant develops and maintains a digital ecosystem for the exchange of healthcare data. It has over 8,000 employees globally.
