UK-based aircraft and aero-engine manufacturer GKN Aerospace has opened a new maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility in San Diego, California, US.

The new facility was built next to their existing site, doubling GKN’s regional capacity. The $55m facility spans 13,935sqm.

The new site uses advanced automation and robotics to improve repair service reliability, increase efficiency, and expedite turnaround times for various engine components. It also offers advanced repair capabilities for current engines (e.g., GE LEAP, P&W GTF) and legacy platforms.

The San Diego facility will support nearly 400 global customers across civil and military aviation industries.

Joakim Andersson, president of engine systems at GKN Aerospace thanked the local government and community for making San Diego the “ideal location” for this facility.

“This significant investment brings the latest automated manufacturing technologies to our business while emphasizing our commitment to our customers in North America helping to meet the growing demand for MRO in the region,” he added.
