German semiconductor manufacturer Infineon Technologies has started construction on its new semiconductor backend production site in Samut Prakan, Thailand. Operations are set to begin in early 2026 and the site may be expanded in the future depending on market demand.

The new plant will contribute to the growth of the semiconductor industry in Thailand. Leveraging its strategic location in Southeast Asia, the plant will cover key components and materials within the supply chain. Furthermore, Infineon has developed a comprehensive training program to enhance skills in artificial intelligence (AI), digitalization, and automation, with the first group of Thai engineers already completing training at other Infineon locations.

Rutger Wijburg, COO of Infineon said, “This investment is a key step in our strategy to diversify our manufacturing footprint and optimize it in terms of costs while matching the expansion of our frontend capacities.”

The project is supported by the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI). In December 2024, the National Semiconductor and Advanced Electronics Policy Committee (or the Semiconductor Board) approved a strategy to develop a skilled workforce to prepare for a new wave of foreign direct investment in the sector, which could bring at least 500bn baht ($14.4bn) into the country by 2029.

“The establishment of the Semiconductor Board along with Infineon’s investment will significantly enhance the regional semiconductor industry and ecosystem. It will position Thailand as a key player in the global semiconductor industry,” added Narit Therdsteerasukdi, the BOI’s Secretary General.

Last year in August, Infineon opened a new Southeast Asian fab in Kulim, Malaysia. In 2024, it also opened new facilities in Romania, Taiwan, and China.
