Japan-based JX Advanced Metals Corp has established a new manufacturing plant in Mesa, Arizona, US.

The new plant, to be operated by JX Advanced Metals USA, seeks to bolster its sputtering target business for semiconductors. While the plant has been in trial operation since July, it is scheduled to start full-scale production in early 2025.

The new plant, spanning 260,000 sqm, is significantly larger than its existing site in Chandler, Arizona. The firm has implemented advanced equipment in the new plant, automating the entire process from machining to inspection, boosting productivity. The company aims to cement this plant further as the cornerstone of its US advanced materials operations.

Suwabe Takeshi, general manager of the thin film materials division, praised the recent developments in IT, AI, and mobility in the US.

The new plant would “contribute to the development of the industry by supplying cutting-edge semiconductor materials”, he added.

The company picked Arizona for its new plant, driven by the state’s growing cluster of semiconductor companies. Since 2020, Arizona has witnessed $102Bn in semiconductor investments. In 2024, Intel and TSMC announced mega projects worth $34.5Bn and $25Bn, respectively.
