LanzaJet, a sustainable fuel technology company with headquarters in the US, has announced that it has selected Wilton International, Teesside, UK as the site for its next production facility, Project Speedbird.
LanzaJet has partnered with UK-based Sembcorp Utilities, a fully owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries, to develop an ethanol-to-sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facility at Wilton International, an industrial area in Middlesbrough. Through the collaboration with British Airways, the Speedbird project will produce more than 90,000t of SAF and renewable diesel fuel per year.
With funding from the UK government’s Advanced Fuels Fund, Project Speedbird is expected to create approximately 30 skilled long-term jobs within LanzaJet’s operations. The fuel produced is anticipated to reduce net carbon dioxide emissions by about 230,000mt — annually equivalent to the emissions from 26,000 domestic flights operated by British Airways in the UK.
Jimmy Samartzis, CEO of LanzaJet said, “Wilton International was selected for its strategic location and advanced infrastructure, essential for SAF production. This selection underscores Teesside’s pivotal role in the U.K.’s energy transition and industrial decarbonization efforts. By leveraging Wilton International’s capabilities, the project enhances the region’s status as a leader in alternative energy initiatives, contributing significantly to the U.K.’s clean energy objectives.”
He added “Through our collaboration with British Airways, we are building a local supply chain for SAF – a critical solution for reducing lifecycle net carbon emissions in aviation – while supporting the U.K.’s ambition to lead the energy transition. Project Speedbird demonstrates the potential of aligning technology, investment, and partnerships to address the aviation industry’s carbon emissions.”
The new facility will use alcohol-to-jet technology developed by LanzaJet at its Freedom Pines Fuels facility in Georgia, US. That site is the world’s first commercial ethanol-to-SAF production plant. The Speedbird project will also establish key regional partnerships to develop the local economy further.
