American semiconductor company Nvidia reached an agreement with the Dutch government to provide hardware and technological support for the potential development of an artificial intelligence (AI) facility. The project falls under the European Union’s (EU) plans to strengthen the bloc’s digital economy.

In 2024, the Netherlands said it would set aside €204.5m ($222.07m) as well as make use of EU subsidies to develop AI in the country. They hope to build a facility that will develop AI with a “supercomputer.”

“Discussions were held with Nvidia about the delivery of hardware and support with knowledge in creating the required infrastructure,” according to a government statement. Dutch Economic Affairs Minister Dirk Beljaarts is on a visit to the US to bolster business ties between Dutch and American tech companies.

“Competition is fierce, the whole world is after this technology […] This deal brings building a Dutch AI facility a lot closer,” Beljaarts said of the deal.

Last October, Denmark inaugurated the nation’s first supercomputer, Gefion, with Nvidia.
