Switzerland-based Leonteq, a finance and technology company specialising in structured finance and insurance products, has established a new office in Lisbon, Portugal. The opening forms part of the company’s strategy to support business growth while protecting its long-term profitability.

The company selected Lisbon as its new location for several reasons, including talent and sourcing opportunities, political stability, quality of life, time zone and cost considerations.

The office was established through a phased approach. Phase 1 involved establishing a serviced office set-up in late 2020, and the hiring of a small number of external IT development specialists and shared services personnel. Phase 2 was launched in early 2021 to establish a Leonteq office with up to 100 designated roles along the entire value chain. In October 2021, the company received regulatory approval to open its Portugal branch and will transition its current 50 external specialists to permanent Leonteq employees.

In a press release, chief executive officer Lukas Ruflin stated: “We are delighted to open our office in Portugal as we are expanding mindfully and growing our pool of experts in Lisbon. This extension comes as a natural next step within our growth strategy and enables us to continue investing in key initiatives while protecting our profitability over the long term.”

Leonteq is headquartered in Zurich. The company has offices and subsidiaries in 13 countries, through which it serves more than 50 markets.
