Taiwanese companies have announced their intention to invest in Ukraine after a meeting between members of the management team at UkraineInvest – the country’s investment promotion agency – and representatives from Taiwan’s Trade Centre in Kyiv and the Taiwan Representative Office in Poland.
According to a statement released by UkraineInvest, the parties discussed ways to attract Taiwanese investment in Ukraine and establish economic, trade and business cooperation between the two countries. A Ukrainian business delegation will travel to Taiwan in April to continue talks on trade and investment matters. The delegation will include company representatives from the electronics, medical, engineering and energy sectors.
“The Taiwanese side shared important insights and opportunities for Ukrainian companies and entrepreneurs in the context of cooperation with Taiwan,” the statement reads. “These include, in particular, grants for participation in trade fairs, organisation of bilateral trade missions, and exchange of contracts for partner search.”
Officials in Kyiv have been under mounting pressure to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) from abroad, as investors look for ways to ensure their investments against the constant threat of Russian strikes. In July 2023, FDI net inflows reached $403m, up from $150m in July 2022.
In 2023, Taiwan earmarked $59m in humanitarian aid for Ukraine in response to the Russian invasion, now in its third year. In addition, the governments of the Czech Republic and Taiwan signed an agreement to help with the reconstruction of Ukraine. The agreement will enable both countries to conduct joint work and restore water and energy systems destroyed by Russian air strikes.
