Forklift and tow tractor manufacturer Toyota Material Handling has broken ground on a new $100m project to expand operations at its headquarters campus in the US city of Columbus, Indiana.

The project will see the construction of a new 295,000sqft (27,400sqm) building that will specialise in electric forklift production. Toyota Material Handling, a US subsidiary of Japan’s Toyota Industries, will hire 85 additional employees before production begins in June 2026.

The new facility will use advanced manufacturing processes to accelerate the production process. Once it is complete, Toyota’s Columbus footprint will cover nearly 1.8 million square feet (167,000sqm).

Tony Miller, senior vice president of pperations, engineering and strategic planning at Toyota Material Handling, said: “At Toyota, we will always be driven by what’s best for our customers. Electric products are more popular than ever, and we are committed to doing what it takes to keep up with the increase in demand.”

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb added: “We’re so grateful to see Toyota continuing to invest heavily in southern Indiana. Toyota’s been a cherished partner and career cultivator to the State for the last 35 years, and we look forward to strengthening our bond even more in the decades to come in and around the Columbus region.

“Today’s remarkable announcement shows yet again just how important our state’s business-friendly environment – focus on long-term success and access to a skilled workforce – is to companies seeking to expand and grow far into the future.”
