Weleda, a Swiss manufacturer of beauty products and naturopathic medicines, has opened a zero-emissions logistics centre in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany.
The $90m facility spans 72,000sqm and is designed as a “cradle campus.” The centre, which is “100% emissions free” will use 10,000 photovoltaic modules to provide solar energy and will also be powered by geothermal energy.
It brings together six of the company’s logistics operations, improving processing services for 47 countries and handling up to 10,000 daily orders. The facility, designed by the Michelgroup, was built mostly from local timber and rammed earth.
Tina Müller, CEO of Weleda AG, said, “The Cradle Campus aligns perfectly with the Weleda strategy. It stands for responsible growth. Protecting our planet requires new ways of thinking and acting. It is not enough to simply do less harm to natural resources. We must operate regeneratively. Sustainability and growth are not opposing forces; sustainability drives growth.”
The new facility will enhance order efficiency through using digital logistics tools and an automated high-bay warehouse. Its new timber facility also has increased storage capacity, with space for 17,200 pallets.
The logistics hub will manage products manufactured at Weleda UK for distribution to other company hubs worldwide. In turn, it will also manage products produced by the Swiss and German hubs that are sold in the UK.
