DHL Express announces $120m expansion in Mexico

DHL Express Mexico's expansion will create an estimated 200 jobs in Santiago de Queretaro.

Transportation services company DHL Express Mexico has invested $120m to expand its domestic air hub in Santiago de Queretaro, Mexico, by 30,000m².

The deal follows a partnership being signed with Mexico-based company Terminal Logistics.

The expansion helps with the capacity to operate 41,000 pieces an hour with fully automated facilities and will create 200 new jobs.

DHL was founded in San Francisco in 1969, but Deutsche Post acquired a controlling interest in the company in 2001 and acquired all outstanding shares in December 2002. DHL is considered to be the world's leading logistics company, employing 395,000 people who work in more than 220 countries and territories. It claims to deliver more than 1.6 billion packages a year.

Mexico has benefited from the nearshoring trend in recent years. Last year, Mexico received more greenfield investments from the US than it did in 2019 (pre-Covid). The country is regarded as a manufacturing hub, particularly in automotive, but its large population is a big draw for foreign investors.

Santiago de Queretaro is located in central Mexico, more than 300km from Mexico City, and is considered a business hub within the country with a good quality of life. Other international companies with operations in the city include Bombardier Aerospace, Kellogg's, Samsung Electronics, Daewoo and Colgate-Palmolive.
