Investing in Peru: what you need to know

As of 2021, Peru has a population of 33.1 million, making it the 45th largest country in the world by this measure. There are 50.1% males and 49.9% females.

There are 16.0 million people employed in Peru, with an unemployment rate of 8.5% – 1.5 million people.


Peru is the 47th largest economy in the world with a GDP of $226.8bn. Peru’s GDP has grown by 65% between 2010 and 2021 and is expected to grow by 29% by 2025.

As of 2021 there are 2 million students in tertiary education in Peru, with 2.6 million students in secondary and 3.7 million in primary education. Peru spent 3.8% of its GDP on education in 2019.

Peru ranked 76th in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 68th. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), Peru finished 65th, after ranking 65th in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $7.9bn and private healthcare expenditure equalled $3.9bn in 2018.

The largest urban areas in Peru are Lima (10 million people), Arequipa (1.1 million) and Trujillo (1 million).
