As of 2021, Spain has a population of 47.4 million, making it the 30th largest country in the world by this measure. There are 48.9% males and 51.1% females.

There are 19.8 million people employed in Spain, with an unemployment rate of 16.7% – 3.2 million people.


Spain is the 13th largest economy in the world with a GDP of $1.4trn. Spain’s GDP has grown by 1% between 2010 and 2021 and is expected to grow by 20% by 2025.

As of 2021 there are 2 million students in tertiary education in Spain, with 3.4 million students in secondary and 3.1 million in primary education. Spain spent 3.9% of its GDP on education in 2019.

Spain ranked 30th in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 30th. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), Spain finished 23rd, after ranking 23rd in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $89.0bn and private healthcare expenditure equalled $37.3bn in 2018.

The largest urban areas in Spain are Madrid (6.8 million people), Barcelona (5.6 million) and Valencia (2.6 million).
