Investing in the UAE: what you need to know

As of 2021, the UAE has a population of 10 million, making it the 92nd largest country in the world by this measure. There are 68.9% males and 31.1% females.

There are 6.7 million people employed in the UAE, with an unemployment rate of 2.8% – 174,968 people.


The UAE is the 30th largest economy in the world with a GDP of $427.9bn. The UAE’s GDP has grown by 47% between 2010 and 2021 and is expected to grow by 17% by 2025.

As of 2021 there are 212,784 students in tertiary education in the UAE, with 91,277 students in secondary and 592,172 in primary education.

The UAE ranked 16th in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 11th. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), the UAE finished 25th, after ranking 25th in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $10.5bn and private healthcare expenditure equalled $3.8bn in 2018.

The largest urban areas in the UAE are Dubai (3.4 million people), Abu Dhabi (3.3 million) and Sharjah (1.5 million).
