Investing in the UK: what you need to know

As of 2021, the UK has a population of 67.5 million, making it the 21st largest country in the world by this measure. There are 49.4% males and 50.6% females.

There are 32.1 million people employed in the UK, with an unemployment rate of 5.5% – 1.5 million people.


The UK is the seventh largest economy in the world with a GDP of $2.8 trillion. The UK’s GDP has grown by 12% between 2010 and 2021 and is expected to grow by 6% by 2025.

As of 2021 there are 2.5 million students in tertiary education in the UK, with 6.5 million students in secondary and 5.2 million in primary education. The UK spent 5.4% of its GDP on education in 2019.

The UK ranked eighth in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished ninth. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), the UK finished ninth, after ranking eighth in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $212.8 billion and private healthcare expenditure equalled $63.1 billion in 2018.

The largest urban areas in the UK are London (14.7 million people), Manchester (3.8 million) and the West Midlands urban area (2.6 million).
