US-based social news aggregator Reddit has opened a new office in the Barangaroo area of Sydney, Australia. The new branch opens with a team of local community, engineering and sales staff. The team will focus on partnering with local entities, working with Australia-based moderators and communities, and establishing local brand partnerships.
Australia is home to Reddit’s fourth-largest user base, growing 40% year over year. Gaming, cryptocurrency and entertainment are among the most popular interest groups for Australian Redditors.
In a press release, chief operating officer Jen Wong said: “We have been fortunate to experience strong organic growth from our Australian user base in recent years, and with this comes a significant opportunity to level up our local offering in a more focused and nuanced way. From building out our highly engaged Australian communities to finding homes for local brands on the platform, this launch is just the beginning of our investment in the market and key to our wider international vision as we continue to scale Reddit at pace.”
Australian users spend an average of 31 minutes a day on Reddit, more than Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and Pinterest. Collectively, they contribute 158 million posts, comments and votes every month.
The Sydney launch follows Reddit’s office openings in Canada in March 2021 and the UK in September 2020.
